“What would you write if you weren’t afraid?” —Mary Karr, The Art of Memoir
Have you ever dreamed of writing a book? Do you have a story inside you begging to be brought into the light?
Writing a memoir is a huge undertaking that requires guidance, support, and accountability. That’s why we’ve created “Own the Ending”—a six-month coaching program designed to help the budding memoirist develop a writing practice and build a toolkit for reaching that first draft milestone (and beyond).
“Own the Ending” Coaching Program includes the following:
Our twenty-four week curriculum answers questions and explores topics related to memoir. Below are some of the modules you’ll encounter during the course of the program.
For memoirists who have completed at least 20,000 words of their manuscript, we offer a developmental editing service. The cost is $0.04 per word, which aligns with the Editorial Freelancer's Associations 2024 editorial rates for memoir editing. The bonus for you as a writer? Getting two coaches for the price of one.
Our developmental edit will include the following:
We currently do not offer copyediting or proofreading services.
Fill out the form below and send us a 1,000–1,200-word sample of your manuscript. If we feel that we are the right editors for the job, we will return a free sample edit of your work along with an estimated timeline—then you can decide if we’re the right fit for you.
After collaborating on Megan’s memoir, Dissonance (available on November 25, 2024), she and her sister-in-law, Danielle, began brainstorming ideas for how to help other women tell their stories. Megan recalled a conversation with a friend who’d been given a journaling exercise in therapy. She was asked to acknowledge the part of herself she had not yet given a voice to; the therapist said, “Give her the pen.”
At Give Her the Pen, our mission is to empower women to heal and thrive by owning their stories. We aim to provide a supportive and nurturing environment where women can discover their unique voices and share their life experiences through memoir writing. We believe that every woman's story is valuable and deserves to be heard. We provide the resources, guidance, and community needed to turn writing into a powerful tool for personal growth and meaningful self-expression.
Megan was sitting in her eighth-grade Honors English class when she realized she wanted to become a teacher. Her dream was to teach high school English—and while she ultimately chose music education as her career path, Megan held onto her love of reading and writing. After a decade of teaching in the public schools, and five years in music ministry, Megan has transitioned to full-time coaching. In addition to her work with Give Her the Pen, Megan is a part-time voice instructor and director of the Lux Women’s Choir, based in Midland, Michigan. Megan’s memoir Dissonance will be released on November 25th, 2024.
Danielle has been a freelance editor since 2021. They have worked with Catapult, Soft Skull Press, and Dragonfly Editorial. Danielle and Megan began working together on Megan’s memoir, and soon an idea to use their writing and editing expertise transformed into Give Her the Pen. Before becoming an editor, Danielle worked in the Chicago theatre scene as a dramaturg for new playwrights, even running a theatre company, NoMads Art Collective. They received a copyediting certificate from the University of California San Diego and BFA in Theatre Arts/BA in Philosophy from DePaul University. They live in Bangkok, Thailand, with their spouse and two cats, Tater and Turnip.
